The annual production of Langston Hughes’ ‘Black Nativity’ at the Lorraine Hansberry Theater is one of the most uplifting holiday experiences around. The renowned poet and playwright’s interpretation of the Nativity is brought to life with the sound of a full choir and live accompaniment. The song-play is based on African American traditions of dance, gospel music, verse and the Bible. Hughes splits the performance into two parts – the Christmas nativity and a rousing celebration of gospel music.
