Agnolo Gaddi’s frescoes

The lengthy restoration of Agnolo Gaddi’s superb frescoes in the Chapel of the Holy Girdle in Prato’s cathedral has been completed. The chapel was built to house the Sacred Girdle, brought back from the Holy Land by Michele Dagomari in 1141, which is one of Prato’s pride and joys. The frescoes were painted between 1392 and 1395 by the Gaddi and represent the scenes from the life of the Virgin and the legend of the Holy underwear itself. The unusual circular pulpit on the outside of the cathedral is a superb piece of sculpture. It was designed by Michelozzo in 1428 and decorated with dancing ‘putti’ by Donatello.
